What’s been happening and why the delays ….…
- A significant amount of the road widening, and kerbs installation works to facilitate the new layout of the junction has been completed, notably on the south, west and north of the junction.
- Works on the upgrading and installation of the surface water drainage systems has been completed.
- Construction of the retaining walls to support the topography of the new junction, has commenced and is progressing well.
- Delays to the works to east of the junction, due to a number of reasons as summarised below:
Delays associated with the diversion works of existing utilities, which are managed by third party bodies outside of Warwickshire County Council. The affected services were identified ahead of the works starting, and provisions in the construction programme were made for the works to be carried out. However, the utility companies have taken longer to complete the works than forecast.
Challenging site conditions and environmental constraints, particularly the impact of noise and vibration from the construction operations to the residents, resulting in additional surveys and ground testing to be carried out, combined with a review of the design and construction methods proposed near to properties.
The results of the surveys and testing in the area required the contractor to redesign the planned works, when complete the new design needed to be technically reviewed to ensure that it met the environmental health requirements and the required road construction standards, as well as needing to be approved by both Stratford District Council and Warwickshire County Council. The unanticipated redesign, review and approval significantly increased the forecast timescale for the completion of this key section of the works whilst continuing to ensure the safety of residents, those using the junction and the work force is maintained at all times.
The permanent works for the walls have now commenced and are progressing well on site but much later than originally planned.
When will the scheme be finished and what will the difference be?
- Our project management team and contractor are constantly reviewing the programme and exploring all possible and safe avenues to speed up the works, including the utilisation of weekend working where possible. We currently anticipate that the scheme will be completed in spring 2024.
- To reduce the delays caused by the temporary traffic management, the contractor is carrying out tarmac works to widen the road on the Fosse way and Harbury Lane. This is to be able to bring the temporary traffic signal heads closer towards the junction, which will help reduce the waiting time at the junction. These works will facilitate the next phase of the works on site, while the kerbs and drainage installation works draw to a close.
- Upon completion of the works, permanent lights will be in place along with a wider and a newly surfaced road. This will allow for a more controlled, and ultimately safer, traffic flow through the crossroads.
Works to be completed over the coming period?
- Preparation works for the construction of the remaining reinforced concrete walls and the construction of the walls.
- Installation of the top beams for the walls and handrails.
- Installation of the permanent traffic signals and new street lighting
- Installations of road signs and new road surface.
Our contractor and site supervision team are working hard to progress these works as quickly as possible and deliver the much-needed safety improvements to this junction, we apologise for the disruption and inconvenience caused in the area.
